Why Portland...

Image
I was listening to this representative from some place called Portland State babble on about how great his university was.  "integration into the community. highly respectable. great programs. recognisable" was what I heard him say. It intrigued me, no doubt, but I wanted a place I'd love to live in and my sights were set on Chicago or New York or San Fran not some place in... I squint at the brochure he passed me ...Oregon. Where is that even? Probably the mid west. Yea. I don't think I can handle that. "Any questions?" A few hands shot up asking questions about requirements, scholarships and you know, other boring stuff like that that you can probably find on the website. Then I raised my hand and said, "So, what's Portland like? Is it a city? or is it more of a ....town?" I swear, his eyes lit up. "I used to live in San Francisco, and I moved to Portland because I loved it more" Yea right. Get a load of this tall angmo, making stor...

Predestination.

Image
"Let's say we travel back in time, and one small thing changes your whole life can change" We were having one of those deep (go-nowhere) conversations. "So there can be realities that exist concurrently with the reality that you exist in now" Okay I wasn't being deep, I just liked entertaining the idea of parallel universes.  (where I might be tall and good at math and patience and stuff..) "But you know, there's the matter of a predestined route as well.  WAIT!! DO YOU LIKE TIME TRAVEL MOVIES!?" Irwin was practically jumping around. "Uhm it depends I guess" I say "You need to watch Predestination.  Omg so good. " So I did. Guys, best movie I've watched this year. Reals. I barely recommend movies to anyone, I mean it doesn't even matter to me if you skipped The Hobbit, Furious 7 or The Avengers or whatever. But Predestination, Predestination it's the real deal. It's the kind of movie that plays with your mind...

How To Have The Most Impromptu Picnic Ever.

Image
I think Bob and I are really bad at making plans. Because we always have these grand ideas that never really take flight. But on Saturday. On Saturday... "What are we doing today?" We were having brunch in a "hipster" cafe in Bangsar South, bad decision. Hipster cafes are so mainstream, I don't know what's what anymore. I'm so done with eating "hipster" breakfasts that are actually incredibly disappointing. Bad coffee. bad combo of ingredients in the dish. bad portions. tell me it's chorizo but I'm sure that's just ham and not very good ham.  But anyway... "Hmm, we could go to KL that's like an adventure right?" "Should we go for a picnic?" "What to eat?" "Is there a supermarket here ah?" and it was already the afternoon when we were arrived in Cold Storage. Made a quick dash around the place because we wanted to get there before sunset. 1. What to eat on your picnic. "Bread? with wha...

What Mama Says | How To Take Pictures.

Image
"Someone sent flowers for you ma," my mum tells mama "lets take a picture to show them that you got it" I was assigned the task of photographer of course. "Wait wait, I need to put on my lipstick first" mama says pointing to her bag. "okay I'm ready now, shall I sit down over here?" she plonks herself down on the couch. I take a few pics, "okay I'll send this to the aunty"  "Wait. Let me see first how I look first" Mama wants to QC it. I pass her my phone an she expertly swipes at the screen, comparing the pictures. I'm thinking, wow. how does she know how to do that??  Bear in mind she turned 90 last year.  "hmm..look so fat here," mama says, "we take another one? We move the flowers to this side" and she pulls the bouquet basket to her side. *click click* "aiyo I look so old. How come I look so old?" "Bad lighting here ma, camera got problems" She swipes through the pictur...

Why It Isn't Fun To Play Monopoly.

Image
I was walking around Toys R' Us (10 years ago) when I saw a glimmering Monopoly Set.  It was everything I didn't even know I wanted. It was the Powerpuff Girls Edition. I (very) obviously had to have it and I begged my mum to buy it for me. I may have even cried, I can't remember. But what I do remember is her driving me all the way to One Utama one night, and me, skipping toward the board game section and picking up my PPG Monopoly set. Life was good. I loved my Monopoly Set. What 10 year old loves Monopoly?  My 10 year old self loved Monopoly. Especially one with properties like "Pokey Oaks Kindergarten" and "Fuzzy Lumpkins' Cabin" I made everyone play with me. It was a dream come true.  But over the years, somehow or rather, I completely forgot about it. I know, this is totally the beginning of "saya sebuah set monopoly edisi budak powerpuff" or something. - While I was packing to move last year,  I found my shiny, glimmering PPG Monopo...

What Mama Says | About Valentines Day

Image
Mama had a hair appointment, so we spent the day in Bangsar on Valentines Day. "It's Valentines day today ma" " Oh ya! It's the 14th is it? I completely forgot it's the 14th" "Ya! The restaurants are going to be all packed tonight" "So...is Bob taking you out tonight?" she didn't really say Bob. "No, maybe tomorrow" "Did he buy you flowers?" "No. No he didn't," I say.  (He thinks they're too mainstream..Yea whatever, who needs flowers anyway :< ) "Oh..Maybe you can get him a book" "What kind of book?" "...a book about what you should do for Valentines day" x
